91XxBoa43qL._SL1500_pap. $9.95; ebk. ISBN 9781617731358.  The latest installment from Slater (Lovers & Haters) portraying day-to-day life in Detroit’s Coleman High School has a definite feel of urban fiction but with the profanity and hard-core sex removed. Xavier Hunter’s junior year isn’t going well. He’s held down at home by his fanatically religious father who burns Xavier’s designer-label clothes as messages from Satan. In school he’s ostracized as a snitch from last year’s ratting out of the Second Street Gang. On top of this drama, Xavier has women problems. Pregnant Brenda outs him as her baby daddy and squeeze Samantha dumps Xavier to hook up with an upcoming major league baseball star. Heather, who’s dangerously bipolar, vows her love for Xavier. Things get ultraserious when a fellow student is gunned down. The school’s security cop sums it up: “People are starting to have a nasty habit of coming up hurt or dead around you. …there is heart to this tale and at-risk readers, especially incarcerated teens, will love Xavier’s multiple dilemmas.

“Entertaining yet enlightening, Calvin Slater tackles teen issues with honesty and humor.
Lover & Haters is a must-read.”
–Travis Hunter, author of On the Come Up

Travis Hunter

A gritty yet heartwarming debut for teens chronicles the coming-of-age of 16-year-old Xavier Hunter, who navigates new love amid the challenges of drugs, gangs and other woes in inner-city Detroit.

Xavier’s general compassion and particular interest in the attractive Samantha become readers’ entryway into a teenage underworld where conflict meets him at every corner. His path to a solution will affect not only his own future, but the futures of those he cares about the most. Using a voice that comes directly from young Detroiters, Slater (a pseudonym) mixes in the humor of the dozens, the African-American oral tradition in which two competitors go head to head in a competition of good-natured insults, to color his characters with authenticity. The novel digs deep into the lore of the Detroit inner city to offer an abrasive narrative populated by many stereotypes and one-dimensional clichés; these throw Xavier’s determination to go in a new direction in sharp relief. Slater presents tough situations that lack strong context, which, combined with the stereotypes, may serve to reinforce rather than break down unwarranted assumptions.

Readers who bring to the novel an understanding of the circumstances impoverished inner-city life can beget will find inspiration in Xavier’s story. (Fiction. 14-18)
